What are some proven tips to make a move go as smooth as possible? Relocation can feel like an emotional roller coaster - but it doesn't have to be that way. It depends a lot on your approach. The secret to minimizing stress is to remain positive, believing that your move is a time of discovery, not regrets:

  • Before the move...
Be upbeat. Accentuate the positive. Gather factual information on what can happen and ways to deal with move-related events. Be flexible.

  • During the move...
To get away from moving stress, schedule family recreation time and quiet time. Exercise on a regular basis - it's a great stress-buster Seek support from family and friends Eat regular, well balanced meals. Hunger intensifies stress.

  • After the move...
Help everyone in the family make new professional and social contacts Look into community resources to provide the family with information on important services in your new community.

Relocation FAQS:

When I am offered a transfer, what are some important questions I need to ask my employer?
When considering relocation, good questions are critical to you. Today's job candidates are wiser, more sophisticated and knowledgeable than ever. It is vital to ask tough questions and consider all your options. Here are some questions you might ask:

  • Will the company pay me a bonus for moving?
Ask around to see if the company has paid other employees a special bonus for relocating. If bonuses have been paid, the word has probably gotten around.

  • Will I receive a bonus if I use my own real estate broker and sell my home myself?
Some companies offer a 1-2% bonus of the appraised market value of the home for successful advance marketing.

  • How many trips to the new area will my company provide?
Often, two or more trips are among relocation benefits.

  • What home buying costs will the company pay on my behalf?
Many companies pay closing costs but not prepaids. Some pay for inspections.

  • Will the company handle shipping of all my possessions?
Most companies have a list of items they will and will not pay to ship. Be sure to ask about large items such as cars(how many), boats, RVs, riding lawnmowers, lumber, pets, horses, workshop equipment, firewood. Remember to ask about expensive items such as artwork, furs, family heirlooms, collections that may require additional insurance.

  • If I were to take this new position, my spouse will be out of work. We need that second income; how will the company help?
Some companies have a program to assist with spouse job placement. Others may help on a case by case basis or not at all.
